Google, Wikipedia and Facebook

If there are three sites which are perhaps as crucial to my existence as a grad student as air, water and food they would be Google, Wikipedia and Facebook.

Therefore, today was an unusual Islamic fast for me. Without any water or food.

Wikipedia has been blocked by Wikipedia Foundation in order to protest SOPA. And as it claims, if SOPA passes through and wiki goes down, it might have hard consequences for me.

Facebook stands blocked due to Institute's own helplessness against the tide of rising number of users. Apparently Facebook used to consume a lot of bandwidth. And since it was definitely not being used up for any academically productive purposes, the institute in all its fine wisdom decided to block it so as to free up the clogged network. This is its own version of HOV lanes concept or peak time user charges for congested areas.

In fact the revered DoSA (acronym for Dean of Student Affairs, which always reminds me of a ubiquitous south Indian gourmet delicacy) expressed his helplessness in having had to take such an extreme step. And he gave the congested highway analogy so that the perspicacious, knowledgeable and enlightened Times of India will not have to tax its already overburdened and about to collapse neural networks.

Facebook has been beyond bounds for me for last one week. Seems like an eternity. I have been fasting like a Jain Monk....surviving only on water and air for last one week. I missed a couple of birthdays and other gossip. I also have pictures collecting up on my digicam ready to be dumped into Facebook's cloud (or wherever it bothers to store them up). It was during one such attempt to google a method to access Facebook safely (without letting my password to be hacked by a random site) that I saw a news item and was startled by it.

The all high and mighty, respected and glorious, Government of India has been contemplating action against Google (as well as Facebook) for having some objectionable content on its various sites. Now, I am totally opting out of the debate whether the said content is objectionable or not. That would make up for another interesting post later on. But one prospect mortifies me.

I have somehow survived a day without water and food... Wikipedia and Facebook actually. What if Google is shut down in India? What will I do? What will happen to my masters project? How long will I survive...an hour or more? What after that?

I think I will be forced to breathe knowledge and information from the stuffy, smelly, dusty, dingy, cluttered carrels in the Library. If the noisy repair and construction work is not going on...I will also have to explore other sources of artificial supply like the British Council Library.

But what about my mails...my B-School SOPs and other submissions....all the documents stored up on Google Documents? How would I use all those sites where I use my google ID as the primary username? And given the pace at which Indian judiciary walks on judgements, if government passes any ordinance against google, it will be decades before SC will annul that order.

So here I am frantically searching and storing up links that I would need before Google dies out.

I remember few years ago an Indian environmentalist group used to run ads, which had a middle aged male preparing for the coming environmental apocalypse by storing up candles, having his boat ready and other things. I think if I keep getting news like this I may get that paranoid.

Just kidding...

Bhed aur Bhediye

This is a classic Hindi political satire written by Harishankar Parsai. It is no longer present in the hindi course books where I read it for the first time. And I could not find it anywhere on net. So here it is.

एक बार एक वन के पशुओं को ऐसा लगा कि वो सभ्यता के उस स्तर पर पहुँच गए हैं,जहाँ उन्हें एक अच्छी शाशन - व्यवस्था अपनानी चहिए | और एक मत से यह तय हो गया कि वन-प्रदेश मे प्रजातन्त्र की स्थापना हो | पशु समाज मे इस 'क्रान्तिकारी' परिवर्तन से हर्ष कि लहर दौड गई कि सुख-समृद्धि और सुरक्षा का स्वर्ण-युग अब आया और वह आया |

जिस वन प्रदेश में हमारी कहानी ने चरण धरें हैं, उसमें भेडें बहुत थीं- निहायत नेक,इमान्दार,कोमल,विनयी,दयालु,निर्दोष पशु,जो घास को तक फूंक-फूंककर खाता है |

भेडों ने सोचा कि अब हमारा भय दूर हो जाएगा | हम अपने प्रतिनीधियों से कानून बनवायेंगे कि कोई जीवधारी किसी को न सताए, न मारे | सब जीयें और जीने दें | शान्ति,स्नेह,बंधुत्व और सहयोग पर समाज आधारित हो |

और, इधर भेड़ियों ने सोचा कि हमारा अब संकट काल आया |

भेडों कि संख्या इतनी अधिक है कि पंचायत में उनका ही बहुमत होगा और अगर उन्होनें कानून बना दिया कि कोई पशु किसी को न मारेगा, तो हम खायेंगे क्या? क्या हमें घास चरना सीखना पड़ेगा ?

ज्यों-ज्यों चुनाव समीप आता, भेडों का उल्लास बढ्ता जाता | एक दिन बूढें सियार ने भेड़िये से कहा, "मालिक! आज कल आप बड़े उदास रहतें हैं |"

हर भेड़िये के आस-पास दो-चार सियार रहतें ही हैं | जब भेड़िया अपना शिकार खा लेता है, तब ये सियार हड्डियों में लगे मांस को कुतर कर खातें हैं, और हड्डिया चूसतें रहतें हैं | ये भेड़िये के आस-पास दुम हिलातें चलतें हैं, उसकी सेवा करतें हैं, और मौके -बेमौके "हुँआ-हुँआ" चिल्ला कर उसकी जय बोलतें हैं |

तो बूढें सियार ने बड़ी गम्भीरता से पूछा, " महाराज, आपके मुख चन्द्र पर चिन्ता के मेघ क्यों छाए हैं ?"

वो सियार कुछ कविता भी करना जानता होगा या शायद दूसरे की उक्ति को अपना बनाकर कहता हो |

खैर, भेड़िये ने कहा " तुझे क्या मलूम नही है कि वन-प्रदेश में नई सरकार बनने वाली है? हमारा राज तो अब गया |"

सियार ने दांत निपोर कर कहा, " हम क्या जाने महाराज ! हमारे तो आप ही 'माई-बाप' हैं | हम तो कोई और सरकार नही जानते | आपका दिया खातें है, आपके गुण गातें हैं |"

भेड़िये ने कहा "मगर अब समय ऐसा आ रहा है कि सूखी हड्डिया भी चबाने को नहीं मिलेंगी |"

सियार सब जानता था, मगर जान कर भी न जानने का नाटक करना न आता, तो सियार शेर न हो गया होता ! आख़िर भेड़िये ने वन-प्रदेश कि पंचायत के चुनाव कि बात बूढें सियार को समझायी और बढे गिरे मन से कहा,"चुनाव अब पास आता जा रहा है. अब यहाँ से भागने के सिवा कोई चारा नहीं | पर जाए भी कहाँ ?"

सियार ने कहा " मालिक, सर्कस में भर्ती हो जाइए |"

भेड़िये ने कहा ," अरे वहाँ भी शेर और रीछ को तो ले लेतें हैं , पर हम इतने बदनाम हैं कि हमें वहाँ भी कोई नहीं पूछता |"

"तो" सियार ने खूब सोचकर कहा, "अजायब घर में चले जाइए |"

भेड़िये ने कहा,"अरे वहाँ भी जगह नहीं है | सुना है, वहाँ तो आदमी रखें जाने लगें हैं |"

बूढ़ा सियार अब ध्यानमग्न हो गया | उसने एक आँख बन्द की, नीचे के होंठ को ऊपर के दांत से दबाया और एकटक आकाश की तरफ देखने लगा जैसे विश्वात्मा से कनेक्शन जोड़ रहा हो | फिर बोला, "बस समझ मे आ गया मालिक, अगर पंचायत मे भेड़िया जाति का बहुमत हो जाए तो ?"

भेड़िया चिढ के बोला, कहाँ की आसमानी बातें करता है? अरे हमारी जाति कुल दस फीसदी है और भेढें तथा अन्य छोटे पशु नब्बे फीसदी, भला वो हमें क्यू चुनेंगे | अरे,कहीं जिन्दगी अपने को मौत के हाथ सौंप सकती है? मगर हाँ,ऐसा हो सकता तो बात ही क्या थी?

बुढा सियार बोला,"आप खिन्न मत होइए सरकार! एक दिन का समय दीजिये | कल तक कोई योजना बन जाएगी | मगर एक बात है | आपको मेरे कहे अनुसार कार्य करना पड़ेगा |"

मुसीबत मे फँसे भेड़िये ने आखिर सियार को अपना गुरु माना और आज्ञापालन की शपथ ली |

दूसरे दिन बूढ़ा सियार अपने साथ तीन सियारों को लेकर आया |

उनमें से उसने एक को पीले रंग में रँग दिया था,
दूसरे को नीले में और तीसरे को हरे में |

भेड़िये ने देखा और पूछा,"अरे ये कौन हैं?"

बूढ़ा सियार बोला, "ये भी सियार हैं सरकार, मगर रंगें सियार हैं |
आपकी सेवा करेंगे | आपका चुनाव प्रचार करेंगे |"

भेड़िये ने शंका की, "मगर इनकी बात मानेगा कौन? ये तो वैसे ही

छल-कपट के लिए बदनाम हैं |"

सियार ने भेड़िये का हाथ चूमकर कहा, "बड़े भोले हैं आप सरकार! अरे मालिक रुप-रंग बदल देने से तो सुना है आदमी तक बदल जाते हैं | फिर ये तो रंगे सियार हैं |"

और तब बूढ़े सियार ने भेड़िये का भी रुप बदला | मस्तक पर तिलक लगाया,गले में कंठी पहनाई और मुंह में घास के तिनके खोंस दिए | बोला,"अब आप पूरे सन्त हो गए | अब भेडों की सभा में चलेंगे | मगर तीन बातों का ख्याल रखना- अपनी हिंसक आँखो को ऊपर मत उठाना, हमेशा ज़मीन की और देखना और कुछ बोलना मत, नहीं तो सब पोल खुल जाएगी और वहाँ बहुत-सी भेड़े आएँगी, सुन्दर-सुन्दर, मुलायम-मुलायम, तो कहीं किसी को तोड़ मत खाना |"

भेड़िये ने पूछा,"लेकिन ये रंगें सियार क्या करेंगे? ये किस काम आएँगे?"

"ज़रा ठहरो!" भेड़िये ने बूड़े सियार को रोका," कवि, लेखक, नेता, विचारक- ये तो सुना है बड़े अच्छे लोग होते हैं | और ये तीनों........"

बात काटकर सियार बोला ,"ये तीनों सच्चे नहीं हैं, रंगें हुए हैं महाराज! अब चलिए देर मत करिए |"

और वो चले | आगे बूढ़ा सियार था, उसके पीछे रंगें सियारों के बीच भेड़िया चल रहा था- मस्तक पर तिलक, गले में कंठी, मुख में घास के तिनके | धीरे-धीरे चल रहा था | अत्यंत गम्भीरतापूर्वक, सिर झुकाए विनय की मूर्ती!

उधर एक स्थान पर सहस्रों भेड़े एकत्रित हो गयीं थी, उसी सन्त के दर्शन के लिए जिसकी चर्चा बूड़े सियार ने फैला रखी थी |

चारों सियार भेड़िये की जय बोलते हुए भेडों के झुन्ड के पास आए | बूड़े सियार ने एक बार ज़ोर से सन्त भेड़िये की जय बोली! भेडों में पहले से ही यहाँ-वहाँ बैठे सियारों ने भी जयध्वनि की |

भेडों ने देखा तो वे बोलीं," अरे भागो,वह तो भेड़िया है |"

तुरन्त बूड़े सियार ने उन्हे रोककर कहा,"भाइयो और बहनों! अब भय मत करो | भेड़िया राजा सन्त हो गयें हैं | उन्होनें हिंसा बिल्कुल छोड़ दी है | उनका 'हृदय परिवर्तन' हो गया है | वे आज सात दिनो से घास खा रहें हैं | रात-दिन भगवान के भजन और परोपकार में लगे रहतें हैं | उन्होनें अपना जीवन जीव-मात्र की सेवा में अर्पित कर दिया है | अब वे किसी का दिल नहीं दुखाते, किसी का रोम तक नहीं छूते | भेडों से उन्हें विशेष प्रेम है | इस जाति ने जो कष्ट सहें है, उनकी याद करके कभी-कभी भेड़िया सन्त की आँखों में आँसु आ जातें हैं | उनकी अपनी भेड़िया जाति ने जो अत्याचार आप पर किए हैं उनके कारण भेड़िया सन्त का माथा लज्जा से जो झुका है, सो झुका ही हुआ है | परन्तु अब वे शेष जीवन आपकी सेवा में लगाकर तमाम पापों का प्रायश्चित करेंगे | आज सवेरे की ही बात है की एक मासूम भेड़ के बच्चे के पाँव में काँटा लग गया, तो भेड़िया सन्त ने उसे अपने दांतो से निकाला, दांतो से! पर जब वो बेचारा कष्ट से चल बसा, तो भेड़िया सन्त ने सम्मानपूर्वक उसकी अन्त्येष्टि-क्रिया की | उनके घर के पास जो हड्डीयों का ढेर लगा है उसके दान की घोषणा उन्होनें आज ही सवेरे की | अब तो वो सर्वस्व त्याग चुके हैं | अब आप उनसे भय मत करें | उन्हें अपना भाई समझें | बोलो,सब मिलकर सन्त भेड़िया जी की जय!"

भेड़िया जी अभी तक उसी तरह गर्दन में कंठी डाले विनय की मूर्ती बने बैठे थे | बीच में कभी-कभी सामने की ओर एकत्रित भेडों को देख लेते और टपकती हुई लार को गुटक जाते |

बूढ़ा सियार फिर बोला,"भाइयो और बहनों, मैं भेड़िया सन्त से अपने मुखारविन्द से आपको प्रेम और दया का संदेश देने की प्रार्थना करता पर प्रेमवश उनका हृदय भर आया है, वे गदगद हो गए हैं और भावातिरेक से उनका कण्ठ अवरुद्ध हो गया है | वे बोल नही सकते | अब आप इन् तीनो रंगीन प्राणीयों को देखिए | आप इन्हें न पहचान पाए होंगे | पहचाने भी कैसे? ये इस लोक के जीव तो है नहीं | ये तो स्वर्ग के देवता हैं जो हम्हे

सदुपदेश देने के लिए पृथ्वी पर उतरे हैं |

ये पीले विचारक है,कवि है, लेखक भी हैं |
ये नीले नेता और स्वर्ग के पत्रकार है | और ये हरे वाले धर्मगुरु हैं |

अब कविराज आप को स्वर्ग का संगीत सुनाएंगे. हाँ कवि जी..."

पीले सियार को 'हुआँ-हुआँ' के सिवा कुछ और तो आता नही था |
'हुआँ-हुआँ' चिल्ला दिया | शेष सियार भी 'हुआँ-हुआँ'

बोल पड़े | बूढ़े सियार ने आँख के इशारे से शेष सियारों को मना किया
और चतुराई से बात को यों कह कर संभाला, "भई कवि जी तो कोरस
में गीत गाते हैं | पर कुछ समझें आप लोग? कैसे समझ सकतें हैं?
अरे, कवि की बात सबकी समझ में आ जाए तो वो कवि काहे का?
उनकी कविता में से शाश्वत के स्वर फूट रहें हैं | वे कह रहे हैं कि
जैसे स्वर्ग में परमात्मा वैसे ही पृथ्वी पर भेड़िया | हे भेड़िया जी, महान! आप सर्वत्र व्याप्त हैं, सर्वशक्तिमान हैं | प्रातः आपके मस्तक पर तिलक करती है, साँझ की उषा आपका मुख चूमती है, पवन आप पर पंखा करता है और रात्री को आप ही कि ज्योति लक्ष-लक्ष खण्ड होकर आकाश में तारे बन कर चमकती है | हे विराट! आपके चरणो में इस का तुच्छ प्राणी का प्रणाम है |"

फिर नीले रंग के सियार ने कहा, "निर्बलों की रक्षा बलवान ही कर सकतें हैं | भेड़े कोमल हैं, निर्बल हैं, अपनी रक्षा नही कर सकती | भेड़िये बलवान हैं, इसलिए उनके हाथों में अपना हित छोड निश्चिन्त हो जाओ,वह तुम्हारा भाई है | आप एक ही जाति के हो | तुम भेड़ और वह भेड़िया | कितना कम अन्तर है! और बेचारा भेड़िया व्यर्थ ही बदनाम कर दिया गया है कि वह भेडों को खाता है | अरे खाते और हैं और हड्डीयाँ उनके द्वार पर फेंक जाते हैं | ये व्यर्थ ही बदनाम होते हैं | तुम तो पंचायत में बोल भी नही पाओगे | भेड़िये बलवान होतें हैं | यदि तुम पर कोई अन्याय होगा, तो डटकर लड़ेंगे | इसलिए अपने हित की रक्षा के लिए भेड़ियों को चुनकर पंचायत में भेजो | बोलो सन्त भेड़िया की जय!"

ये एक भेड़िये की कथा नही है; यह सब भेड़ियों की कथा है | सब जगह इसी प्रकार प्रचार हो गया और भेडों को विश्वास हो गया कि भेड़िये से बढ़ कर उनका कोई हित-चिन्तक और हित-रक्षक नही है |

और , जब पंचायत का चुनाव हुआ तो भेडों ने अपनी हित-रक्षा के लिए भेड़ियों को चुना | और,पंचायत में भेडों के हितों की रक्षा के लिए भेड़िये प्रतिनिधि बनकर गए |

और पंचायत में भेड़ियों ने भेडों की भलाई के लिए सबसे पहल कानून ये बनाया-

हर भेड़िये को सवेरे नाश्ते के लिए भेड़ का एक मुलायम बच्चा दिया
जाए, दोपहर के भोजन में एक पूरी भेड़ तथा शाम को स्वास्थ्य के
ख्याल से कम खाना चाहिए, इसलिए आधी भेड़ दी जाए |

सम्मान चाहते आतुर चेहरों को
न्याय मांगते शोषित स्वरों को
व्याकुल कुपोषित आशावान पेटों को
बे-आखर खाली स्लेटो को
न्यूनता में जीवित देहों को
दवा डाक्टर वंचित अस्पतालों में
उखड्ती टूंटती उपेक्षित साँसों को

जड़ पाषाण क्षणिक रूपों में
अमरत्व ढूंढती उन आँखों ने
दैवत्व की मौलिक परिभाषा में
ख्याति खोजते उन हाथों ने
शीर्ष पद की लालसा में
सत्ता उन्मत्त अंध अभिमान ने
इतिहास की उस भाषा में
भविष्य रचने के वादों ने

तपते पथ्थरों पर तराशां एक
भव्य संगमरमरी ख्वाब दिखाया है
स्वप्न सदृश श्वेत रूप दे
अँधेरे यथार्थ को झुठलाया है
उन पथ्थरों पर चलने में
पाँव जलेंगे, और वो कहेंगे
इन्हें मुक्ति की सीड़ियाँ न समझना
और ये रास्ते सशक्त भविष्य नहीं

this is a short story in hindi written by Phanishwar Nath 'Renu'. One of the most famous of his works, written in anchalik hindi. I tried to search it all over the net....found no where. It has now been removed from the hindi syllabus (where most of us read it for the first time), and i had to search for some old books to find this. I have typed this in hindi to maintain the original flavor, since most of the versions on net are english (sad). soon i will type another famous short story 'bhed aur bhediye'. till then enjoy this one :)

पिछले पंद्रह महीने से दंड-जुर्माने के पैसे जमा करके महतो टोली के पंचों ने पेट्रोमेक्स खरीदा है इस बार, रामनवमी के मेले में | गाँव में सब मिलाकर आठ पंचायतें हैं | हरेक जाति की अलग अलग 'सभाचट्टी ' है | सभी पंचायतों में दरी, जाजिम , सतरंजी और पेट्रोमेक्स हैं - पेट्रोमेक्स, जिसे गाँव वाले पंचलैट कहते हैं |

पंचलैट खरीदने के बाद पंचो ने मेले में ही तय किया - दस रुपये जो बच गए हैं, इससे पूजा सामग्री खरीद ली जाए - बिना नेम टेम के कल-कब्जे वाली चीज़ का पुन्याह नहीं करना चाहिए | अँगरेज़ बहादुर के राज में भी पुल बनाने के पहले बलि दी जाती थी |

मेले में सभी दिन-दहाड़े ही गाँव लौटे; सबसे आगे पंचायत का छडीदार पंचलैट का डिब्बा माथे पर लेकर और उसके पीछे सरदार, दीवान, और पंच वगैरह | गाँव के बाहर ही ब्रह्मण टोली के फुटंगी झा ने टोक दिया - कितने मे लालटेन खरीद हुआ महतो ?

.... देखते नहीं हैं, पंचलैट है! बामन टोली के लोग ऐसे ही बात करते हैं | अपने घर की ढिबरी को भी बिजली-बत्ती कहेंगे और दूसरों के पंचलैट को लालटेन |

टोले भर के लोग जमा हो गए | औरत-मर्द, बूढ़े-बच्चे सभी कामकाज छोड़कर दौड़ आये - चल रे चल ! अपना पंचलैट आया है, पंचलैट ! छड़ीदार अगनू महतो रह- रहकर लोगों को चेतावनी देने लगा - हाँ, दूर से, जरा दूर से ! छू-छा मत करो, ठेस न लगे |

सरदार ने अपनी स्त्री से कहा- सांझ को पूजा होगी; जल्द से नहा-धोकर चौका-पीढ़ा लगाओ |

टोले की कीर्तन-मंडली के मूलगैन ने अपने भगतिया पच्च्को को समझा कर कहा- देखो, आज पंचलैट की रौशनी मे कीर्तन होगा | बेताले लोगों से पहले ही कह देता हूँ , आज यदि आखर धरने में डेढ़-बेड़ हुआ, तो दूसरे दिन से एकदम बैकाट |

औरतों की मंडली मे गुलरी काकी गोसाईं का गीत गुनगुनाने लगी | छोटे-छोटे बच्चों ने उत्साह के मारे बेवजह शोरगुल मचाना शुरू किया |

सूरज डूबने के एक घंटा पहले ही टोले भर के लोग सरदार के दरवाजे पर आकर खड़े हो गए- पंचलैट, पंचलैट !
पंचलैट के सिवा और कोई गप नहीं, कोई दूसरी बात नहीं | सरदार ने गुड़गुड़ी पीते हुआ कहा- दुकानदार ने पहले सुनाया, पूरे पांच कौड़ी पांच रुपया | मैंने कहा की दुकानदार साहेब मत समझिये की हम एकदम देहाती हैं | बहुत बहुत पंचलैट देखा है | इसके बाद दुकानदार मेरा मूंह देखने लगा | बोला, लगता है आप जाती के सरदार हैं | ठीक है, जब आप सरदार होकर खुद पंचलैट खरीदने आये हैं तो जाइए, पूरे पांच कौड़ी में आपको दे रहे हैं |

दीवान जी ने कहा -- अलबत्ता चेहरा परखने वाला दूकानदार है | पंचलैट का बक्सा दूकान का नौकर देना नहीं चाहता था | मैंने कहा, देखिये दूकानदार साहेब, बिना बक्सा पंचलैट कैसे ले जायेंगे | दूकानदार ने नौकर को डांठते हुए कहा, क्यों रें ! दीवान जी की आँख के आगे 'धुरखेल' करता है ; दे दो बक्सा |

टोले के लोगो ने अपने सरदार और दीवान को श्रद्धा-भरी निगाहों से देखा | छड़ीदार ने औरतों की मंडली को सुनाया - रास्ते मे सन्न-सन्न बोलता था पंचलैट |

लेकिन....ऐन मौके पर 'लेकिन' लग गया ! रुदल साह बनिए की दूकान से तीन बोतल किरासन तेल आया और सवाल पैदा हुआ, पंचलैट को जलाएगा कौन ?

यह बात पहले किसी के दिमाग में नहीं आई थी | पंचलैट खरीदने के पहले किसी ने न सोचा | खरीदने के बाद भी नहीं | अब पूजा की सामग्री चौकी पर सजी हुई है, किर्तनिया लोग खोल-ढोल-करताल खोल कर बैठे हैं, और पंचलैट पड़ा हुआ है | गाँव वालो ने आज तक कोई ऐसी चीज़ नहीं खरीदी, जिसमे जलाने-बुझाने की झंझट हो | कहावत है न, भाई रे, गाय लूं ? तो दुहे कौन ? ....लो मजा ! अब इस कल-कब्जे वाली चीज़ को कौन बाले ?

यह बात नहीं की गाँव भर मे कोई पंचलैट जलाने वाला नहीं | हरेक पंचायत मे पंचलैट है, उसके जलाने वाले जानकार हैं | लेकिन सवाल है कि पहली बार नेम-टेम करके, शुभ-लाभ करके, दूसरी पंचायत के आदमी की मदद से पंचलैट जलेगा? इससे तो अच्छा है कि पंचलैट पड़ा रहे | ज़िन्दगी भर ताना कौन सहे ! बात-बात मे दूसरे टोले के लोग कूट करेंगे -- तुम लोगों का पंचलैट पहली बार दूसरे के हाथ .....! न, न ! पंचायत की इज्जत का सवाल है | दूसरे टोले के लोगो से मत कहिये |

चारों ओर उदासी छा गयी | अन्धेरा बढ़ने लगा | किसी ने अपने घर मे आज ढिबरी भी नहीं जलाई थी | .....आखिर पंचलैट के सामने ढिबरी कौन बालता है |

सब किये-कराये पर पानी फिर रहा था | सरदार, दीवान और छड़ीदार कि मुंह मे बोली नहीं | पंचों के चेहरे उतर गए थे | किसी ने दबी आवाज़ मे कहा -- कल-कब्जे वाली चीज़ का नखरा बहुत बड़ा होता है |

एक नौजवान ने आकर सूचना दी -- राजपूत टोली के लोग हसतें- हसतें पागल हो रहे हैं | कहते हैं, कान पकड़ कर पंचलैट के सामने पांच बार उठो-बैठो, तुरंत जलने लगेगा |

पंचों ने सुनकर मन-ही-मन कहा -- भगवान् ने हसने का मौका दिया है, हसेंगे नहीं ? एक बूढ़े ने लाकर खबर दी -- रूदल साह बनिया भारी बतंगड़ आदमी है | कह रहा है पंचलैट का पम्पू ज़रा होशियारी से देना |

गुलरी काकी की बेटी मुनरी के मुंह में बार-बार एक बात आकर मन में लौट जाती है | वह कैसे बोले ? वह जानती है कि गोधन पंचलैट बालना जानता है | लेकिन, गोधन का हुक्का-पानी पंचायत से बंद है | मुनरी कि माँ ने पंचायत से फरियाद की थी कि गोधन रोज उसकी बेटी को देखकर 'सलम-सलम' वाला सलीमा का गीत गाता है - हम तुमसे मोहब्बत करके सलम | पंचों की निगाह पर गोधन बहुत दिन से चढ़ा हुआ था | दूसरे गाँव से आकर बसा है गोधन, और अब तक टोले के पंचों को पान-सुपारी खाने के लिए भी कुछ नहीं दिया | परवाह ही नहीं करता | बस, पंचों को मौका मिला | दस रुपया जुर्माना | न देने से हुक्का-पानी बंद | ....आज तक गोधन पंचायत से बाहर है | उससे कैसे कहा जाए ! मुनरी उसका नाम कैसे ले ? और उधर जाती का पानी उतर रहा है |

मुनरी ने चालाकी से अपनी सहली कनेली के कान में बात दाल दी -- कनेली ! ...चिगो, चिध, -s -s , चीन....|

कनेली मुस्कराकर रहा गयी --गोधन...तो बंद है | मुनरी बोली --तू कह तो सरदार से |

'गोधन जानता है पंचलैट बालना |' कनेली बोली |

कौन, गोधन ? जानता है बालना ? लेकिन .... |

सरदार ने दीवान की ओर देखा और दीवान ने पंचों की ओर | पंचों ने एक मत होकर हुक्का-पानी बंद किया है | सलीमा का गीत गाकर आँख का इशारा मारने वाले गोधन से गाँव भर के लोग नाराज़ थे | सरदार ने कहा -- जाति की बंदिश क्या, जबकि जाति की इज्जत ही पानी में बही जा रही है ! क्यों जी दीवान ?

दीवान ने कहा -- ठीक है |

पंचों ने भी एक स्वर में कहा -- ठीक है | गोधन को खोल दिया जाय |

सरदार ने छड़ीदार को भेजा | छड़ीदार वापस आकर बोला -- गोधन आने को राज़ी नहीं हो रहा है | कहता है, पंचों की क्या परतीत है ? कोई कल-कब्ज़ा बिगड़ गया तो मुझे ही दंड जुर्माना भरना पड़ेगा |

छड़ीदार ने रोनी सूरत बना कर कहा -- किसी तरह से गोधन को राज़ी करवाइए, नहीं तो कल से गाँव मे मुंह दिखाना मुश्किल हो जाएगा |

गुलरी काकी बोली -- ज़रा मैं देखूं कहके |

गुलरी काकी उठ कर गोधन के झोपड़े की ओर गयी और गोधन को मना लाई | सभी के चेहरे पर नयी आशा की रोशनी चमकी | गोधन चुपचाप पंचलैट में तेल भरने लगा | सरदार की स्त्री ने पूजा सामग्री के पास चक्कर काटती हुई बिल्ली को भगाया | कीर्तन-मंडली के मूलगैन मुरछल के बालों को संवारने लगा | गोधन ने पूछा -- इस्पिरिट कहाँ है ? बिना इस्पिरिट के कैसे जलेगा ?

.... लो मजा ! अब यह दूसरा बखेड़ा खड़ा हुआ | सभी ने मन ही मन सरदार, दीवान और पंचों की बुद्धि पर अविश्वास प्रकट किया -- बिना बूझे-समझे काम करते हैं यह लोग | उपस्थित जन-समूह में फिर मायूसी छा गई | लेकिन, गोधन बड़ा होशियार लड़का है | बिना इस्पिरिट के ही पंचलैट जलाएगा | ....थोडा गरी का तेल ला दो | मुनरी दौड़कर गई और एक मलसी गरी का तेल ले आई | गोधन पंचलैट में पम्प देने लगा |

पंचलैट की रेशमी थैली मे धीरे-धीरे रौशनी आने लगी | गोधन कभी मुंह से फूंकता, कभी पंचलैट की चाबी घुमाता | थोड़ी देर के बाद पंचलैट से सनसनाहट की आवाज़ निकालने लगी और रोशनी बढती गई | लोगों के दिल का मैल दूर हो गया | गोधन बड़ा काबिल लड़का है |

अंत में पंचलैट की रोशनी से सारी टोली जगमगा उठी, तो कीर्तनिया लोगों ने एक स्वर में, महावीर स्वामी की जय-ध्वनि के साथ कीर्तन शुरू कर दिया | पंचलैट की रोशनी में सभी के मुस्कराते हुए चेहरे स्पष्ट हो गए | गोधन ने सबका दिल जीत लिया | मुनरी ने हरकत-भरी निगाह से गोधन की ओर देखा | आँखें चार हुई और आँखों ही आँखों मे बातें हुई - कहा सुना माफ़ करना ! मेरा क्या कसूर ?

सरदार ने गोधन को बहुत प्यार से पास बुला कर कहा -- तुमने जाति की इज्जत रखी है | तुम्हारे सात खून माफ़ | खूब गाओ सलीमा का गाना |

गुलरी काकी बोली -- आज रात में मेरे घर में खाना गोधन |

गोधन ने एक बार फिर मुनरी की ओर देखा | मुनरी की पलके झुक गई |

कीर्तनिया लोगो ने एक कीर्तन समाप्त कर जयध्वनि की -- जय हो ! जय हो! ....पंचलैट के प्रकाश में पेड़-पौधों का पत्ता-पत्ता पुलकित हो रहा था |

I am spending my summer in Orissa this year, Bhubaneswar and its surrounding areas to be precise. I hope I will get some time to traipse around some of the tourist sites in the city. My field trips start next week, and that will provide me with ample opportunity to blog about a lot of things. But before that, here is a simple list of what am I doing right now, where I am etc etc.

I am staying at KIIT campus, which is beautiful and well constructed. I don't see any good playgrounds or a good gym though. Big Bazaar and some other good shops are nearby. The XIMB campus is about 60 rupee auto away and that is also the location where you can find a good watering hole, Smokin Joe's , Domino's, an ice cream parlor called The Idiot's, one Mughlai-Chinese Restaurant and a Cafe Coffee Day.
I travelled to Puri last week and a week before that, I saw some major temples in the city of Bhubaneswar. I did darshan of Lingaraj and Jagannath. I saw the majestic ratha being built for ratha yatra in Puri. I saw the Sun Temple at Konark and photographed each of its 24 Wheels and some of the carved idols.
If you ever get a chance to travel from Konark to Puri via the marine drive road, do not miss some of the beaches. They are long, solitary, beautiful, and the waves are wild.
The best temple carvings (by what I have seen till now) are to be found in Konark and the Raja Rani temple in Bhubaneswar. They are so beautiful, that it is impossible to capture it by a camera. Even after one thousand years of battering by the nature, they have retained their beauty. It is impossible to describe the beauty of their form and movement. You have to go there and see it.
I am working with a team which consists of 1 Canadian, 1 Colombian and 1 American. We are yet to clash or fight over anything or get upset with each other. They are very professional, experienced, talented, accommodating, forgiving and cooperative. It has been a good experience working with them till now, and I hope this summer will be very productive for me.
There is another team which also has Bhubaneswar as its station. It consists of one Greek, one Columbian, one American and One Indian. They are also doing well and have enjoyed their stay in India till now.
The area is fertile, green, populous. Capital city is clean, has clean air, is well developed and designed. You do not see enough traffic on the streets though and there are very few traffic jams. And team traffic of the city is AWESOME. They are like the best dressed traffic staff in the country complete with shades, cowboy hats, gloves and boots.
I also saw the shanti stupa and Ashoka's rock inscriptions near the battlefield of the Kalinga War. The inscriptions were in Brahmi with Pali language.
Monsoon has started here, and the first few showers have been crazy. It is usually very hot and sunny in the mornings. But by evening we have heavy clouds, winds and heavy downpours. The back up systems at the university have however made sure that we do not face long power cuts.
The grass is sold legally outside temples, especially the Shiva ones. The going rate is about 400 rupees for one joint and it is negotiable. I have not had any myself though.

His sleep was disturbed by loud guttural voices. The voices were loud and terrifying.

HONG!HONG!HONG!HONG!.....UDHUGH! UDHUGH! UDHUGH! UDHUGH!

AAHHAA!!! HAAHUUAAHH!!!AAHHAAA!!!

they loosely resembled the sounds on Talibani (and Iraqi and Al Qaeda's) execution videos, where helpless hostages were decapitated for the entertainment of masses and which provide the content for unlimited intellectually stimulating one-line(or more) online debates, peppered and were salted with references to different body parts, on discussion forums, you tube comment sections etc.

AAGH!!AAGH!!AAGH!AAGH! UGH!! UGH! KHAAGGH!! KHAAGH!!

the sounds were terrible, as the neck made desperate attempts to stay united with the rest of the body.

Then one final loud and absolutely terrorizing

KHWACK!!!

He felt the urge to go outside and see what was actually happening. But he was terrified, and more than that he was lazy. He did not have any classes that morning, and he had no intention of getting out of the bed even if someone was being murdered just a few metres away from his room. Finally, he decided that he will not step outside, and the voices died down after a few minutes. The victim was perhaps dead. He heard some footsteps outside his doors. The killers were walking away. He just prayed that he will not have to see the gory sight of the dead body. With the head thrown away a few feet away. He had seen some pictures on the internet, and did not wish at all to see all that in reality. In a few minutes, the house keeeping staff will come, and they will clean up the area. He decided to step out only once he had heard someone clean up the area.

He lived in a boys hostel. A pretty large one. He was a simple, honest, truthful, humble, punctual, studious, god-fearing guy and respected and revered his teachers and was totally detested by all and had no friends. The hostel had long corridors, with rooms on the either side and washrooms at the end of every corridor. The rooms closest to the washrooms were the one which no one wanted to occupy. He, being a simple, honest, truthful, humble, punctual, studious, god-fearing guy who respected and revered his teachers and was totally detested by all and had no friends, volunteered to live in one such room so that someone else was spared that torture.

He heard no shrieks and cries when the housekeeping staff arrived. He heard them open all the taps, letting the water flow. Perhaps to wash off the blood. He smelled a faint odor of phenyl and some other disinfectant. The housekeeping staff finished the job quickly. He was surprised that they treated a murder in such normal manner. He stepped outside. The washrooms were only a few metres away. They were spic and span, except for some nasty remnants of turd who valiantly fought off all attacks from all kind of chemical disinfectants, and had forced the chief commander of the disinfectant army to instruct his chemical soldiers to bypass the areas of heavy resistance by such turd elements. There was no sign of the execution that had taken place just half an hour back. Perhaps the killers were hand in glove with the house keeping staff. There was a great conspiracy behind all this. He decided to keep this matter to himself, and not tell anyone lest he is the one who is executed next.

The next morning he was once again woken up by similar horrifying sounds. Some was being executed gruesomely once again.

ORHGH!!!KHONGHH!!ARRGH!!!GHUDGHAD!!HOONGHHH!!!

AAGH!!AAGH!!AAGH!AAGH! UGH!! UGH! KHAAGGH!! KHAAGH!!

and then the final

KHWACKKKK!!!!!

The execution must have been really painful for the victim. He sat on his bed. Petrified, stupefied, terrified, horrified, and prayed that the house keeping staff, who he believed were hand in glove with the killers will once again come and clean up the body and blood, so that he will not have to take the effort of informing institute security about the cold blooded gruesome murder. The killer walked past his door. He could hear dripping noise of some fluid. He imagined the killer walking through the corridor with a 12 inch long blade dripping with blood in his blood covered hands. It was a mystery to him that no one else was concerned about the killings. Perhaps, everybody was as petrified, stupefied, terrified, horrified as him, and prayed every day that the house keeping staff, who they believed were hand in glove with the killers, will once again and clean up the body and blood, so that they will not have to take the effort of informing institute security about the cold blooded gruesome murders. He shuddered at the thought of such silence of the lambs, even as the wolf was slowly killing hostel residents one by one.

The daily executions seemed to bother no one in his hostel. But he was worried about it all the time. He wondered about it in his class. He wondered about it in the mess halls. He wondered about it in the café. He wondered about it during the evening jog. He wondered about it in his labs. He wondered about it when he wondered about other things. He feared that he will also be executed some day in a similar fashion. So he stopped using the washrooms of his hostel. He would wake up in the morning and straightaway head for the class, making a dash as he tried to escape the killer who was perhaps around wanting to get the right opportunity to grab his neck. He packed his toiletries, towel, and some clothes along with his books in his bag. He started using the spacious washrooms of his department. Nobody however noticed this behavior as he would get over the daily ablutions much before the first students trickled in for the classes.

Meanwhile he started planning his own schemes in order to determine who the killer is and thus save his own life or at least make the killer shift the executions to a place where he would not disturbed by those horrifying sounds.

The Afternoon Killing: Part Two

The next day, as soon as he woke up, Bhanu packed his bag on his own. He did not want Bela to check through at the last moment. After that he sat down to study. When their parents left, Bela started to pack their lunches and Bhanu told her that he has packed his bag himself today. She was relieved and thought that finally the kids are getting mature and responsible. They started to leave for school at 7:15 and stepped outside. Then, Bela saw the ball protruding out of the bag, its outline clearly visible. She immediately understood the motivation behind Bhanu’s behavior today. She pounced upon him, and took away his bag. She took out the red ball and then threw it inside the house. Then holding him by his ears, she told him not to try to act smart and then took him to school.

Bhanu was too shocked to react. He kept on walking silently towards the school. He now feared for what may happen in the recess. Nobody would buy his explanation. Bullying and ridicule was for sure. Those four periods before recess passed away very fast that day. And as he had feared, he was jeered, booed, ridiculed, derided, and thrown out of his team as they were unable to play anything that day.

When he saw Bela’s figure in the afternoon, as she came to take the kids home, he thought about killing her. He was very silent and did not talk much. Bela understood this as remnants of morning anger, nothing more. They went home and after having lunch sat down to study. Bhanu’s mind was restless. He thought about possible methods to kill Bela. He had seen many murders on television using guns, knives and hammers, but he had no gun, no big knives, and no big hammers. If he goes into kitchen Bela would notice. Then he thought about poisoning her. The only poison he could think of was a mosquito repellent coil. There was a big ‘POISON’ written over its packet. Perhaps he should powder one entire coil and mix it in Bela’s drinking water. But Bela may smell it and will not drink it. Even this scheme was very likely to fail. Bela was a very cunning woman, he thought. It also occurred to him that he can push away Bela into the way of a speeding vehicle when she takes them or brings them back from school. But the way she used to tug them and sometimes beat them, Bhanu was sure that Bela was much more powerful than him, and he may not be able to gather enough force to push her away. She may indeed, at that time slap him in public. Such disparity in strength also ruled out strangulation as a possible method.

As he was contemplating about possible methods of murder, he drew Bela’s figure on a rough sheet. A big hideous monster with large limbs and an ugly circular face with abstract senses came alive on his sheet. He then started poking it with his compass. He enjoyed as the monster’s body became riddled with holes. And then he started doing it rapidly. His sister’s curiosity was aroused by the sound that compass made with each hole. She came to him to see what he was up to.

Bhanu stopped when he saw his sister keenly observing him. She enquired about the figure and why is he poking with the compass. Bhanu just told her that he is killing chachi to ger rid off her forever. Once she is dead she will not be around to enforce her strict discipline on them. The thought of killing chachi looked rational to her sister too. She took a look at the poke marked figure and then said

“Kill her at the legs also”

Bhanu immediately made a couple of holes in the paper, where he had drawn monster’s legs.

“Is she dead now?” she asked.

“No I will burn it. They burn the bodies in flms after death. I will burn it. She will not come back after that”.

Then he went into kitchen. He came back with a matchbox. And then he tore the sheet out of his notebook, and lit it. The monster was soon reduced to ashes.

The burning smell filled the room. Now they were left behind with the ashes.

“What should we do with the ashes?” he asked Bhagwati.

“They immerse them in Ganga, after burning it. But how will we reach Ganga”.

“No!”He said “we will immerse them in the drain. She does not deserve to be immersed in Ganga.”

They went outside and gleefully performed the ceremony. The ashes flowed down with water and then dissolved in it a little distance ahead. They came back to their room and once again sat down in front of their books.

A little later Bhanu started to feel a little lonely. A strange tumult of emotions came to his mind. He started thinking what if Bela was really killed? What if she was indeed burnt away and her ashes immersed. They will be left alone as soon as their parents left. Who would pack their bags, give them breakfast, and take them to school? Who would help them with their homework? They will have to come home and prepare lunch for everyone. They will also have to the household work, as everyone would leave for work early in the morning. Who will iron his school dress, sometimes so crisp that teachers would commend Bhanu for being so immaculately dressed for school? And what if Bhuvan would bring another wife for himself after Bela was gone. One cannot be sure if she will not be as oppressive as Bela, Bhanu thought. As Bhanu thought more about it, he realized Bela was indispensable part of the household. Everyone needed her, and their lives would be impossible without her.

Then for the first time, Bhanu realized that his life will be tough without Bela, although same cannot be said for his school friends. They were selfish and jealous. And he was thinking about killing her just because they jeered him today. Bhanu eyes suddenly grew moist and he regretted what he did to that figure. He now knew how much he actually loved Bela. He ran from his room to Bela’s room.

She was knitting on a chair. Bhanu went and hugged her, and started crying. Bela was very surprised at this. She thought that the twins had another fight and perhaps Bhagwati bit Bhanu. She grew angry and thinking that she may have to resolve another of their conflicts over something trivial, she held him. And angrily asked, “What is the matter with you? Did both of you had another fight? Today you will surely get a beating by your father. Let him come. I will tell him about the ball as well as this.”

At this Bhanu started crying, and confided everything to her. After hearing everything and knowing Bhanu’s new found love for her, her eyes also grew moist and she hugged Bhanu.
Since that day she became less impatient with their behavior, while Bhanu did everything possible to be as obedient to her Bela chachee as possible.

The Afternoon Killing : Part One

They returned from school, and banged on the rusty gate. The school closed early today due to the death of a teacher. They were happy about it. They were able to eat the freshly prepared jalebees at the sweet shop on the Lahoriyan Street and came back singing songs and shouting ‘holiday, holiday!’ all the way. Bhagwati and Bhanu, the twins reached home. Suddenly their smiles disappeared.

Bela chachee was at home and she opened the gate. She was surprised to see them back so soon. She angrily enquired why they were back so soon.

“Did both of you run away from school?”

“No! One teacher died. He was hit yesterday by a sugarcane truck. Principal Sir declared a holiday” Bhagwati replied. Bhanu did not reply and just walked inside. He did not like his chachee at all.

“Both of you ….wash quickly and sit down to study” Chachee thundered and continued “I will ask your father to go to school tomorrow and enquire for the real reason. I am sure you must have done something and have been thrown out of the school”.

Bhagwati and Bhanu quietly changed and sat down to study. The joy of a surprise holiday was short and the atmosphere was finally morose.

Bhanu and Bhagwati’s parents, Banshidhar Bisht and Bhaghirathi, were teachers in a distant government inter college. The younger brother of their father, Bhuvan and his wife Bela, lived with them. Bhuvan worked in the local bulb-making factory. Bela was a home maker. The younger sister of their mother, Ritu whose husband was a soldier, also lived with them. Her husband came home only twice a year for about a month each. Since Ritu and her husband did not have any kids of their own, both of them adored Bhanu and Bhagwati a lot. They loved the days when the soldier would come home. Ritu had earlier always lived with her husband, in the place of his posting. But two years ago he was posted to Kashmir and Ritu was uncomfortable with the thought of living there. She decided to live with her sister and found a job in a local nursery school as a teacher.

The three families have been living together for last two years. Bela was the only homemaker in the household. Bhanu and Bhawati woke up at 5 in the morning. Bela would give them milk and make them study for an hour before preparing them for school and then sending them away. Their parents would leave the house a little earlier than them since their school was in a different town 30 kms away. Their uncle Buvan had fortnightly shifts and he would sometimes stay back and sometimes leave at the same time as others. Their aunt, Ritu, also left home before them. By 7 they were left with Bela alone. She used to pack their lunches and prepare them for school and then finally accompany them to their school. She stayed back at home and finished all the usual household work.

After their school was over, she would go to school and bring the kids home. After feeding them lunch she helped the kids with their homework. She was very particular about their studies. She herself was forced to leave her education unfinished due to an early marriage. She was determined to see to it that the kids get the best education and made every possible effort on her part. After studying for two hours they got a break when their parents and other members of the household came back at 5 in the evening.

The evenings were full of excitement, fun and frolic. Their father took them to market on his bike. Bhanu loved the air flowing through his hair and he would often sing loudly. After having some chaat at one of the stalls in Muneem Lane, they would come back by 7, after which they watched television. They generally slept by 10 p.m. after dinner.

Bhanu never liked Bela though. He always saw her as a tough disciplinarian. His own mother seldom scolded him. She used to spend evenings with him and indulged him a lot, very like is father in those few hours. He never liked being woken up early in the morning and then made to drink the glass of hot milk. The early morning study sessions under the watchful eyes of Bela were resented by both the twins. As their parents got ready for their work, they labored with the books. Then like and old-time army instructor she would get them ready. Shouting instructions, tugging them, packing their lunches, setting their school bags and then finally she would take them to school. Her sharp eyes restricted Bhanu’s freedom. She never allowed him to play with neighborhood kids. She never let him read comics, bring friends to home and tried to restrict his television watching timings to evenings only. She was a tough disciplinarian and was too concerned about his studies. Bhanu hated her a lot.

As the IPL fever built up, Bhanu’s classmates decided to organize their own league. Their class had two sections and each section was divided into two teams each. The four teams would play a couple of matches with each other. The eventual winners will be given a treat at one of the stalls in the Muneem Lane. After fixing the match schedule, duly taking into account the half-yearly examinations, they came down to more logistical issues. Someone has to arrange for the bat, ball, stumps pads and other equipment required for the matches. More importantly, it has to be sneaked into the school grounds so that they can play during their hour long recess. Their smelly old physical education teacher would not let them play cricket otherwise. After a lot of deliberation, everyone was given the responsibility of sneaking one item each. Bhanu was expected to bring the much hallowed red cricket ball.

After he came home he deliberated about how to first purchase the ball. Short of money he had only one option, to ask his father. But for that he will have to do something to please him. As he thought about it, he remembered his dad was worried about his maths skills one day. So, it would be a good way to make him happy by showing him some progress. He quickly fished out his dog-eared maths book and sat down solving the problems.

His father came back by 5, and was really happy to see a notebook full of math problems, all fully solved. Bhanu proudly claimed that he finished more than 100 problems today. He hugged him proudly. Bhanu knew that he will get the cricket ball today.

In the evening, when they were in the main market and just about to enter the Muneem Lane for their daily chaat session, Bhanu pointed out to the Mohan Sports Shop and said that he wanted a cricket ball. His father duly obliged. He came back home happily, with his shining red possession in his hands.

Left Behind : Part Two

They blocked the road leading to the temple from the main road. The police had surrounded the entire slum and the riot control vehicles were ready. They started by demolishing the shanties closest to the road. They did not bother if the house was locked or there were belongings of the slum dwellers inside. The policemen would force away the occupants and then the workers and the bulldozers would do the rest. It was not very difficult for them to bring down those structures held together by mud, plastic sheets, paper, polythene, stolen iron rods, bits and pieces of wood, nylon ropes etc. People tried twice to come near the bulldozers and in their way, or sometimes plead to a policemen or employee of forest department, but it did not help.

Just as the initial few meters along the road was cleared, shouting protestors on tractors and other vehicles arrived on the scene. They were young workers of the Revolutionary Indian Party (RIP). They were hundreds in number and soon spread out like locusts over the entire area. The police was not prepared to handle this. They did not anticipate interference from RIP in such a small matter. The protestors were an eclectic mixture. Some of them were party workers, some shopkeepers of the Bhoothnath market, but many of them were college students. They were there to block the demolition of the slum. The police was hugely outnumbered, and they were able to block the bulldozers and other workers busy with removing the shanties. They started an impromptu dharna demanding that demolition be stopped immediately and people whose shanties have been razed be given some compensation.

“This land belongs to the people!” shouted one.

“Set fire to the machines of oppression!” cried another.

As protestors seemed unrelenting, police called in reinforcements. Soon more riot control policemen arrived and then a commotion ensued. Newsmen arrived in time to cover the ferment. The young students of the college, with revolutionary slogans in their breadth and concern for the proletariat on their mind, were at the vanguard of the protest and they took the brunt of the police blows. In the end, however the combined might of RIP workers and other supporters proved to be insuppressible. By 4p.m. the demolition was called off. As the state prepared for its withdrawal, the students started celebrating. Their efforts had paid off.

The college union treasurer took the restaurant owner aside, and told him that the fear of new demolition will keep the shopkeepers on tenterhooks. Since they can now bank on RIP to stall any demolition, the shopkeepers should be ready to pay protection money and they should pay it to him. At the same time he received a message from the gold trader, asking him to ensure that the cleared ground is not re-occupied by the slum dwellers. They should either go somewhere else or clear up more forest land.

Meanwhile, a girl who was one of the college protestors thought of making a good use of the rest of the time. She decided to look around and capture some pictures. She parked her jeep at a little distance from the temple and started walking. The evening had set in, and the temple bells were already signaling the preparations of evening prayers. The number of devotees slowly started increasing. As she spent her time photographing the different scenes, enjoying the beauty of proletarian life, a boy laying out fresh marigolds right at the temple entrance caught her eye.

Haria had sustained a few lathis in the melee. He came back and told his son that he will go to his shantie and get some new flowers for the evening as well as do something to relieve his pain. He asked his son to stay in the shop until he comes back. Dhanne was taking the cover off his shop and re-arranging his flowers when a girl approached him with a camera in her hand. She started enquiring about the different flowers. She asked him how did he get them and from where. She took pictures of the flowers as well as smiling Dhanne along with them. Then she sat beside him. Dhanne was surprised and did not know what to do. He did not want her around as he wanted to hawk flowers and sell as many as possible. Even more he was worried that his father will give him a sound beating once again if he did not sell any flowers. But her camera with a TV like screen on its back interested him. After she was done asking her question Dhanne asked her about the camera. Dhanne had never seen anything like that before. Then suddenly she thrust the camera into his hand and told him how to use it. Just look into the screen and press the shiny button on top.

Nervously he handled the camera as she looked on smiling. The screen was amazing. He pressed the button hesitatingly and the screen froze, then it came back live once again. He looked towards the girl, and she took the camera back. She pressed one button and then showed him the first photograph taken by him. It was the stairs leading to the temple. Dhanne now started liking her. He looked away from the devotees approaching the temple and did not care about selling the flowers. She then asked him questions about his life, his daily routine, his studies and many other things. Dhanne told her about his family back at home, about the daily beatings from his father, how they live in their shantie, how cold it is in winters, how their shantie was almost torn apart by heavy rains last year, how his father was beaten by the moneylender’s goons and many other things. He told her that he has never been to school although he knows what it is. They draw pictures on the walls there.

Then the girl asked him if he would come with her. There are people in the city who would give him free food and education. They will give him good place to live in and there will be many kids like him around. Dhanne’s eyes lit up. He hated his oppressive father a lot. He had thought about running away from him many times. Now he had one good chance to do so.

Then she told him she has to leave now. She clicked one last picture of him. Dhanne asked her if he can come along with her. She said that she will send someone tomorrow to pick him up. They are the ones who normally take care of child laborers. Saying this she started walking away. But Dhanne followed her. He suddenly had a hope for a good life ahead, and he would not let it go away so easily. She turned back and when she saw Dhanne following her, she gave him a scornful look. But Dhanne did not notice it. His eyes turned away to look at his shop.

His father would be back soon, and then he will take care of it, he thought. Then to his shock he saw Manohar standing at the temple gates. He hated him very much as Manohar was very abusive and never let him and his father inside the temple. Now since he has seen him, Manohar might tell this to his father. Afraid of another beating later, he turned away quickly and paced towards the girl. She was now near her jeep. She had kept the camera inside and was about to sit in the driver’s seat when she saw him. She gestured him to return back. But Dhanne slowly moved closer to the vehicle. She then closed the door and came to him. And then she placed a tight slap with full force on Dhanne’s cheeks. Shocked and bewildered he stood there. She started the jeep and then drove away.

Haria was shocked to see an empty shop when he came back. He angrily looked around for Dhanne. Today he was going to give him the toughest ever beating he thought. But soon anger gave way to other emotions. Unable to find Dhanne he started making enquiries. Nobody was able to tell him where Dhanne was.

Manohar was preparing to go home when he was told about the missing boy by the temple cleaner. He quickly went outside and called for Haria.

“Panditji has seen your child”, those words were heavenly to Haria’s ears.

Manohar told him that he last saw the boy with a young girl. It was near the parking stand. Someone told Haria about the kidney harvesting racket. Someone might have kidnapped him for his kidneys. Haria feared worst and started crying. Manohar formed a group of 10 people, and started searching the surrounding area with flash lights. Just in case they might have dumped the body somewhere near. Or perhaps the boy just lost his way into the woods.

They found him by the canal. He was asleep. Manohar woke him up and asked him how he reached here. Groggy and staggering the boy stood up. His eyes were puffed up and moist. He just said, ‘peechhe chhod diya’(Left Behind).

Dhanne woke up when the blare of siren became unbearable. The police jeep came close to the temple and stopped. Dhanne was barely interested in the two figures who came out of the jeep. He grabbed the old scrap paint box and started walking towards the canal. He filled it with water and then paced towards the forest to answer the call of nature.

The two figures also moved towards the forest. The Police Inspector carefully analyzed the land. People had chopped down a few more trees in the last few days, constructing more shanties in their place. He knew that this afternoon is going to be a tough one for him. The forest department would try to raze those illegal shanties once again and it was his duty to maintain order while they did their job. After surveying the number of people living their illegally and calculating the amount of police force he would require, he along with his sub-ordinate drove towards the temple for morning prayers. He needed all help and support he could muster.

The temple was established 5 years ago, when a herder claimed to have seen Lord Shiva in the jungle at night, when he went there searching for a lost cow. The next day, there was a mysterious piece of rock protruding out of the ground at that place. The rock was shaped like a lingam. No one had seen that rock before, or since the place was not well frequented nobody was sure whether the rock was already there or not. Someone dropped few flowers over the rock, and people started coming for the darshan. Manohar was the brahmin closest to that area, and once people started visiting the temple, he was called to act as the priest of the new temple. The local businessmen, particularly the builders and real estate developers gave rich offerings to the temple. Slowly they collected enough money to build the temple. Due to the temple, the once isolated place was now buzzing with activity. Soon a few shops were set up, selling materials required for temple prayers and offerings. Beggars are concomitant with any temple complex, they too followed. As the number of devotees grew, the market also grew in size. And the variety of shops also underwent a change. There were fruit sellers, sweetshops, general stores, few dhabas, mechanics, auto repair shops etc. Since the temple was established due to an apparition the temple came to be known as ‘Bhootnath Temple’ and the market as ‘Bhootnath Market.’

The only people not happy with this turn of events were the forest department employees. The entire place, including the temple had come up on the forest land, illegally. Due to institutional lethargy, they took no action for the first few years. Also with two successive elections round the corner, they bided their time. But, once they started to get reports about the illegal land being sold and bought, with the due help of local real estate developers they knew they will have to take action. First the slum behind the temple, housing the workers, petty shopkeepers, beggars etc will have to be removed. Then they will demolish the shops. And finally if they can get enough support, the temple itself. They were going to demolish the slum today.

Manohar had just started to prepare for the morning prayers, when he heard the siren of Police Jeep. Unperturbed, he continued his rituals although his mind was unsettled. The police inspector came up and stood with the early morning devotees. After the pooja was over, he asked the priest for a few minutes. He informed the priest about the expected demolition. There will be only a 1 hr. warning given to the encroachers to collect their belongings. He expected trouble, and since the temple always had a huge crowd of devotees, thought it wise to inform the priest so that at least the temple crowds can be kept in control.

Meanwhile Dhanne was done with the morning rituals, and came to the temple. His father had already spread out all the flowers and was hawking them to the devotees. Fresh roses, marigolds, jasmine, lotuses and many other freshly plucked and drenched flowers were laid out in neat rows. His father scolded him for rising up late and failing to collect any flowers this morning. He silently sat beside his father and his 11 year old hands were on work, hawking and persuading devotees to purchase the flowers.

Dhanne’s father, Haria was an agricultural labor who migrated to this city from his native Chhatarpur nearly two years ago. Drought had ensured that there was no work available. A year later, when Haria finally started selling flowers outside the temple, he felt the need of an extra pair of hands and bought his 9 year old son to the city. At first he was confused, but soon grew up to be street smart.

The priest wisely informed the gold trader, who was also present in the morning pooja and had seen the police inspector. It was not in his interest that the eviction be carried out so soon and so comprehensively. They wanted to chew the land in bits and pieces. Coming out of the temple, he started calling up his friends. One of them was the treasurer of the local college union.

Dhanne was done with putting over a plastic sheet to turn their road side place into a temporary shop, in order to protect his flowers from the sun and dust when he heard a loud commotion. His father asked him to stay behind and look after the shop. He murmured something to the effect that people have come to demolish their little jhuggi and he was going to stop them.

A few hundred metres away from the temple complex the road was jammed with big bulldozers, trucks, buses and jeeps. They were there to demolish the slum: forest officials and policemen.

Tired and heavily sleepy after 4 continuous exams and 5 night outs

Our dear DCF

after the addition of 5 new comps, the DCF looks a little crowded.
The next batch will be of some 49 freshies, and since the existing DCF has only 35 comps, i anticipate problems in future.

Long gone are the days of first semester, when finding a free comp in DCF (to check mail, FB, orkut and laze around in between classes) wasn't a tough task at all. The nights were even more awesome. You could easily sleep, after joining two or more chairs. OR better lie down on floor and snore away till morning. We used to have parties, celebrate, chat talk ,debate and what not (subject to communist PHD checks and controls).
Now, with about 120 students in the department, it is almost impossible to find free computers in between classes. And it is the same story in nights also. Carefree sleep is long gone.

One possible way could be to carpet the DCF, and provide a high speed wi-fi connection. We will bring our laptops, and peacefully sit down on the floor. This will be much cheaper compared to the cost of buying many more desktops.

Shall i go to class?

This semester was specially painful due to 85% rule. I nearly missed W in atleast 3 subjects (and perhaps lost an exchange opportunity due to attendance issues :( ).

Many times, after waking up exactly at 8a.m. for a class starting at ...well 8a.m., I would run this simple algorithm in my mind before dashing out of my room and running to the class in whatever clothes i would be wearing at that time.

Note: The above algorithm does not apply to 9 pointers. For them it is simple
